Encephalartos hidebranti

Although called the Mambassa Palm, this living fossil dates back to the time of the dinosaurs, an ancient cone-bearing relative of all evergreens.

Encephalartos are highly favored by collectors. Our plants are from self-pollinated offspring of distributions by our local botanical garden. All Encephalartos are CITES-protected.

With their arching palm-like fronds and dark green, evergreen foliage, these cycads make stunning ornamental accent potted plants. Before purchasing one of these fossils, one should consider the spines, stems, and thorny leaves that protect them from their ancient foragers. Cold-tolerant, they will take light frosts or short periods of freezing temperatures without damage; nevertheless, in temperate climates, they should be grown as zone 9-10 plants. They are satisfied in most soils and enjoy regular applications of nutrients, and they are happy in either sun or shade.
